GEORGE III INLAID OAK TALL-CASE CLOCK. Last quarter 18th century. The arch-molded hood below a conforming swan’s neck molded cornice terminating in rosettes, centering a pediment surmounted by a finial, supported by free-standing brass-capped columns, the astragal-glazed door opening to the painted dial with Roman numeral chapter ring centering time, strike, and calendar apertures above painted “D. R. 1777″, all within floral-decorated spandrels beneath a moon phase aperture, decorated with a French man-o-war under full sail and a country farm, alternating with moon faces. The eight-day brass movement unmarked. The waisted case crossbanded above the cove molded box base with raised panel raised on shaped bracket feet. Weights, pendulum and key present. SIZE: 91″ h. x 14-1/2″ throat w. x 9-3/4” d. PROVENANCE: From an eastern Connecticut home. CONDITION: Case with old dark surfaces; old repairs and minor imperfections to moldings and veneers. Backboards original. Shrinkage crack to panel on base, bracket feet old and probably original. Dial with original paint and old repaint within chaptering, paint loss from Roman numeral VIII and through center of dial. 9-92693 (800-1,200)
