15″, (38 CM), GERMAN BISQUE DOLL WITH THREE FACES. Attributed to Carl Bergner, circa 1900. This socket head has three expressions: sleeping, crying, and laughing; the crying and smiling versions have blue glass eyes, the sleeping version has closed painted eyes. Attached to the top of the head is a wooded knob with ring handle which allows the head to turn. Underneath a cap of papier maché with a fringe of brown mohair attached to the cap at front serving as a wig. It is attached to a composition shoulder plate glued to a gusseted leather body with bisque forearms. CONDITION: Bisque head is free of damage with no characteristic cheek rubs. The body is most likely not original since it does not contain the usual pull-strings to talk. Chips to bisque fingers. She has been nicely re-costumed in a white organdy baby gown with pink ribbon rosettes. 1-7323 RS (800-1,200)
