PATENT MODEL FOR MAKING TARGET AND TOY “FLYERS”. Patent number is not given on the two remaining tags but it was received 28 August 1879 from G.W. Rathsam. This wooden model demonstrates the machinery for making flyers, the small propeller-shaped toys that were spun rapidly with a stick so they would fly into the air. The fifth claim describes the pieces formed “for targets, from clay, plaster – paris, or other compressible substance, and composed of a series of laterally and oblique or inclined wings.” Sometimes these were made of paper or celluloid to serve as toys rather than targets. This 11″ wide and 11-1/4″ high mahogany model comprises three levers, a 2-part die, and numerous stationary parts. A 4-1/4″ copper flyer is also attached, showing the shape that the compressed item would take. CONDITION: Excellent. One crack in the base at a front leg.
