MARTIALLY MARKED SAN FRANCISCO POLICE SMITH & WESSON 1st MODEL SCHOFIELD REVOLVER. Cal. 45 Schofield. Fine early Schofield with 7” keyhole ribbed barrel, replacement target style front sight, blued finish with two piece walnut grips, the left grip marked with a clear cartouche and the butt is stamped “US”. The top of the backstrap just behind the hammer is hand stamped “332”. These markings all correspond with other markings found on a number of similarly marked Schofields that were supposedly issued from Benicia Arsenal to the San Francisco “Committee of Safety” during the labor riots and unrest in 1877-1878. There are records of 300 such revolvers going to San Francisco and no record of their return to the arsenal. It is so theorized in an article entitled “The San Francisco S&W Schofield Revolver” by Charles W. Pate. Published in “Man At Arms”. The article further theorizes that in addition to the 300 Schofields issued by the arsenal, that the city purchased an additional 100 revolvers. SN 219. CONDITION: Good to very good, all matching including the grips. The barrel retains 10-15% original blue with the balance a medium to dark patina with scattered light surface rust. The frame retains 50-60% thin original blue mixed with patina. The grips are fine with a smooth hand polished patina. The latch screws are slightly battered, strong bore with light pitting A scarce and desirable Schofield. 4-48922 JR715 (4,500-7,500)
