RARE “U.S. EXPRESS” SMITH & WESSON #3 SCHOFIELD 1ST MODEL REVOLVER. Cal. 45 Schofield. Blued finish, bbl cut to 5-1/8”, 2-pc smooth walnut grips. There is a “US” stamped on the toe of the butt with small “L” and “P” proofs on the various parts. This very likely is one of the surplus Schofield’s sold to Bannerman or Schuyler, Hartley & Graham. Both were known to have cut the bbls to the 5” length. Top of the backstrap is stamped “361/U.S.X.”, for the U.S. Express Co. Few of their firearms have survived. SN 1089. CONDITION: Fair to good, as noted. Traces of original finish remain in the very sheltered areas with the balance a medium gray-brown patina with light surface pitting, heavier on the left side of the bbl. All matching except the grips which are numbered 6292, they also show heavy wear and a chipped toe. Bore is bright and shiny with one or two small spots of rust. Mechanics are fine. A very rare Express gun. 4-48036 JR126 (Anderson Collection) (2,500-4,000)
