I. J. TURLYGIN (Russian, 20th Century) “MERCHANT’S WIFE”. Authorized copy of the famous Boris Kustodiev (Russian, 1878-1927) painting. Large oil on canvas scene shows a woman seated on a balcony overlooking a city under blue and white cloud sky. A table is set in the foreground with fruit and breads. A large samovar with teapot is on left and a cat stands on the railing eying the delicacies. Housed in a molded wood frame with gold bead liner. Unsigned front but inscribed on back of canvas in Russian. REFERENCE: Illustrated on the front dust cover of the American translation of “Boris Kustodiev Paintings, Graphic Works, Book Illustrations, Theatrical Designs” by Harry N. Abrams, Publisher. Book chronicles and illustrates his art in Russia before, during and after the Revolution. This painting is an authorized copy of the work approved by the Tretyuakov Gallery, Moscow State Museum, “approved for release to dignitaries”. This painting was painted in the 1980’s and the back carries Moscow Authentication stamps. Lot includes and aforementioned book, also a First Day Issue envelope from the 100th Anniversary with envelope and stamp illustrating this painting along with five other covers.
