HEINRICH ANDREAS SOPHUS PETERSEN (German, 1834-1916) WRECK OF THE SHIP OROZIMBO OFF KEY WEST, FLORIDA, 1860. Outstanding oil on canvas nautical scene shows the three-mast black hulled ship sailing left to right in very heavy swells under dark skies. Two masts have been broken off and flounder next to the vessel while the front mast is partially intact with torn sails. There are several crew members aboard and the ship is in peril. On the bottom border in a handwritten legend “Ship Orozimbo H. L. Townsend, Master. off Key West Florida Sept. 10th 1860”. Signed lower right “H Petersen”. Housed in an antique lemon gold frame with gold liner. REFERENCE: There are two listings for the Schooner Orozimbo, one built in Gouldsborough, Maine with a home port of Calais, Maine in 1854 (161 tons) and the second listing in 1846, built in Essex, MA with Boston, MA as its home port (40 tons). SIZE: 20-1/2″ x 31″. CONDITION: Relined on replaced stretcher, very good with some inpainting. 9-95323 (4,000-6,000)
