SPECTACULAR AND RARE ENGRAVED DELUXE SPECIAL ORDER WINCHESTER MODEL 1894 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 25-35. SN 139319. Extraordinarily rare take-down short rifle with 18″ oct to rnd bbl, Lyman ivory bead front sight, 6-A 2-leaf folding bbl sight and Lyman loop tang sight. The bbl has full matted top and it has a 3/4 magazine. The wood is very highly figured center crotch cut American walnut with “D” carving of oak leaves and acorns with full checkered patterns. It has a capped pistol grip stock and a smooth steel shotgun buttplate. The receiver is beautifully engraved in style “4” patterns nearly identical to the engraving on serial number 64772 pictured on page 259 and serial number 384777 pictured on page 257 of Winchester Engraving” by R.L. Wilson. The engraving on number 384777 is attributed to Nimschke while it appears that the engraving on our rifle is in Ulrich arabesque patterns. The engraving consists of a large scene on the left side depicting a hunter behind a tree apparently having shot two large bull elk and the right side of walking grizzly bear. The entirety of both sides of the receiver is covered with engraving patterns, which are also found over the top of the receiver, back of the hammer, top tang, takedown ring, floor plate, three places on the lever, forend cap and heel of the buttplate. Light engraving patterns also extend about an 1-1/2″ over the chamber area of the bbl. This beautiful rifle also has the rare and distinctive feature of gold wire inlay on the forend cap, chamber end of the bbl, takedown ring, rear edge of the receiver and heel of the buttplate. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter fully identifying this rifle with $24.00 engraving and indicating shipment on December 13, 1902. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl retains 96-97% strong bright original blue and the magazine tube about 98%. Receiver, takedown ring and forend cap retain most of their original bright factory blue with a small wear spot on the right side of the forward edge of the receiver. Lever and hammer retain most of their bright original case colors. Wood is sound with light handling and storage nicks and retains most of its original piano varnish finish. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. 4-52445 JR739 (50,000-100,000)
