JAMES BRADE SWORD (American, 1839-1915) THE RESTFUL SMOKE. Fine Orientalist oil on canvas scene shows a man in red Middle Eastern attire including a white turban. He smokes from a very long pipe and has a mandolin type instrument resting on the step that he sits on. Two dogs sit beside him. Sunlight from the top left corner cascades on the wall behind. Signed lower left “JB Sword”. Housed in what probably is its original gesso decorated gilt frame which has some losses. SIZE: 18″ x 14″. CONDITION: Relined, very good with minor inpainting. 9-92654 (8,000-12,000)
