JOHN RITCHIE (British, 19th Century) “DEFENDING THE WEAK”. Oil on canvas scene shows a boy in tattered clothing with fists up ready to defend a young child that is consoled by an older girl. Her milk jug has been broken and the shadow of the aggressor is seen against a building wall. Signed lower right with conjoined letter “JR”. An old pen written label attached to reverse with title, artist signature and address. Reeves & Sons canvas stamp to reverse. Housed in a good gesso decorated replacement frame. SIZE: 20″ x 16″. CONDITION: Craquelure with stretcher lines visible, some inpainting. Very good. 9-92889 (2,500-4,000)
