JAMES PURDEY BAR IN WOOD HAMMER GUN. SN 10715. Cal. 12ga. Set of new 28-1/8″ steel bbls marked on right bbl “J. PURDEY & SONS” and on left bbl “314-1/2 OXFORD STREET LONDON.” Bbls have a matted rib, 2-1/2″ chambers with Birmingham nitro proofs and are proofed at .729. They are also marked “MADE IN ENGLAND.” Action is typical of Bar In Wood Purdeys with very nicely done rose and scroll engraving probably by noted Purdey engraver J. Lucas, the bar action rebounding sidelocks are marked “J. PURDEY & SONS,” and have dolphin hammers. Gun has dbl triggers, and top lever with Purdey underbolts. The top lever is marked “PATENT.” The orig nicely figured straight grip buttstock with drop points measures 14-3/4″ over calf-leather covered pad. Forend has Anson button release. Bore diameter: right -.733, left -.732. Bore restrictions: right -.016, left -.029. Wall thickness: right -.024, left -.034. Drop at comb: 1-1/2″, drop at heel: 2-1/4″. Weight:6lbs. 10.5oz. CONDITION: Tight and on face. Locks function correctly. Bbls have 100% professional black and were made in Birmingham and show file marks that were not polished out in their making. Action and lockplates are silver colored and free of pitting and obvious wear. Breechfaces show shallow pitting around firing pin holes, a little deeper around right pin hole. Stocks have been refinished in a hand-rubbed oil finish, sharp edges are slightly rounded and wood is slightly under metal; especially at front of action. Checkering has been recut, and leather pad is newly fitted. Trigger guard, top lever, forend iron, and forend tip have been reblued and retain 98% of that blue. Appears to have a new hinge pin fitted when the bbls were made. Bores are bright and shiny. The grip area of the trigger guard has been correctly repolished and the engraving picked up. The area behind the lockplates shows about a 1/4″ crack on the right side and a bit of wood hammering on the left due to recoil; but the stock is still sound. 4-33247 MGM14 (10,000-15,000)
