UNUSUAL CASED PAIR OF JOHN DICKSON & SONS ROUND ACTION EJECTOR GAME GUNS. SN 4024, 4025. Cal. 12ga. 29″ bbls are marked “Sir Joseph Whitworth fluid pressed steel” on the underside and the top rib is marked “JOHN DICKSON & SON 63. PRINCES STREET. EDINBURGH.” There is a John Dickson & Son patent use number “160” on Gun 1 and “161” on Gun 2. Bbls have relatively recent Birmingham Nitro proofs for 2-1/2″ chambers. Gun 1 right bbl is proofed at .729; left bbl is proofed at .740. Both bbls of Gun 2 are proofed at .729. Both guns are engraved with “1” and “2,” respectively, on the top center of their bbls and on top levers. The typical Dickson round triggerplate actions show 100% well-executed scroll engraving with “JOHN DICKSON & SON PATENT” in riband on both sides of actions. The actions have third fasteners, dbl triggers, and automatic safeties, as well as a raised bead around the breech joint as found on many Dickson guns of this period. On the top tangs, “SAFE” is engraved in a gold rectangle and there are two gold tipped cocking indicators. The nicely figured and streaked Circassian walnut stocks measure 14-5/8″ over 3/4″ ebony extensions with checkered butts. Stocks have gold ovals engraved with a dog with crowned collar. Checkering has unusual fancy border on forward edge. Forends are marked “1” and “2” in silver numerals inlaid into uncheckered ovals and are 90% checkered. Gun1) Bore diameter: right -.738, left -.740. Bore restrictions: right -.002, left -.011. Wall thickness: right -.019, left -.022. Drop at comb: 1-5/8″, drop at heel: 2-1/4″. Weight:6lbs 8oz. Gun 2) Bore diameter: right -.732, left -.732. Bore restrictions: right -0, left -.006. Wall thickness: right -.024, left -.026. Drop at comb: 1-5/8″, drop at heel: 2-1/8″. Weight:6lbs 9oz. Guns come with a copy of the ledger page for August 10, 1886, describing a pair of hammerless guns were made for J. Wolf Murray, and giving orig specifications of these guns. Guns are housed in refurbished oak and leather dbl gun case with brass corners. The interior has a leather John Dickson & Sons label. The inside has been relined with maroon felt. In the case is a 2-pc. cleaning rod, a G&JW Hawksley square oil bottle, 2 pairs of plastic Parker-Hale snap caps, various brushes and mops, and a spare pair of ejectors. CONDITION: Gun 1 is tight and on face with top lever slightly left of center. Ejectors are slightly out of time. Gun 2 is tight and on face with top lever slightly right of center. Ejectors are in time. Both bbl sets retain 95% plus professional reblack with makers name and address re-engraved. Chambers of both bbls measure 2-3/4″ and orig specifications state that guns were made with 30″ bbls. Actions are finished bright and Gun 1 has some minor pitting on bead around action balls. Gun 2 has some pitting on left action ball and little bit of discoloration. Trigger guards and top levers have been reblued and show a little wear. Screws show much use over the years. Wood has been refinished in a hand-rubbed oil finish. Checkering on buttstocks and forends has been recut a long time ago. Guns have new hingepins. Case leather is in good condition as restored and the carrying handle is relatively new. 4-33249 MGM15 (25,000-40,000)
