W. H. HORSTMANN 1840’S PERIOD GENERAL OFFICER’S SWORD. Scarce pattern with 31” double edge single fuller blade, etched on both sides with foliate and oak leaf & acorn patterns. Both sides have trophiy of arms with a flag and one side is etched with “W. H. Horstmann/& Sons/ Philadelphia”. It has the beautiful double sided spread wing eagle brass handguard with German silver hexagonal handle swelled in the middle with different patterns of engravings on the six flats. It also has the deep engraved helmet finial and chain handguard. The scabbard is brass with oak leaf decoration fittings, engraved with a trophy of arms and a flying eagle and foliate patterns around the hangers and a large trophy of arms with arabesque patterns in the middle with more engraving at the tip. It is made without a drag. CONDITION: The blade is worn with spotted light corrosion having been cleaned a long time ago. The handguard shows moderate wear with both finials bent down. The handguard and pommel cap is fine. The scabbard has several small dents and three cuts between the hangers. It has traces of what may be old silver plating. 4-48936 JR725 (1,500-2,500)
