NEW ENGLAND MAPLE AND PINE TAVERN TABLE. Second half 18th century. Of unusual form; the rectangular pine top projecting above the canted apron, arched and scalloped on three sides, the fourth side rectangular in form, raised on blocked, ring-turned, swelled, cylindrical legs terminating in unusual ring-turned button and platform feet. The base with traces of old blue paint. SIZE: 29-1/2″ h. x 28″ w. x 19-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: The Henry Dupont summer estate, Long Island, New York. CONDITION: The one-board top appears to be original, not reset. It was mounted with a 5″ overhang on one long side and a 3″ overhang on the opposing side. The top itself does not appear to have been cut, but rather designed this way. The shaped apron appears equally original; the plain apron runs along the side with the 5″ overhang. It is conceivable that the table was designed to fit against a wall, the extra overhang designed to compensate for a chair rail or base molding. The legs are also original, retaining original pins; the feet with appropriate wear having modern steel buttons at bottoms. The whole with skinned blue painted surface over traces of earlier red. 9-92816 (2,500-3,500)
