FINE SHAMSHIRE CEREMONIAL SABER. Built with about a 34” single fuller heavily curved blade, cruciform handguard with 1-1/4” long langettes and a Mameluke style solid brass gold washed handle. It is accompanied by its original silver plated scabbard with fancy repoussed throat, hangers and drag. The back of the handle is inscribed “EL HADJI ABD EL KADER ULID MAHIDDIN / SURRENDERED TO THE FRENCH, DEC. 22D 1847 / DIED 1874”. This fellow was reportedly the Emir of Mascara who started the Holy War in 1839 and was defeated by the French in 1847. The blade is lightly etched with foliate arabesque patterns which are very faint. Also accompanied by a much more modern wooden display case lined with olive velvet which has a Joseph Manton Gun Maker label on the lid. CONDITION: Fine, the blade shows much wear with the decorations very faint and with scattered spots of surface rust. The handle retains most of its gold wash with the backstrap and inside strap of the grip bare brass. The left side of the pommel has light verdigris. The scabbard is sound and retains 75-80% of its original silver plate, the throat and decorative hangers are loose having lost their screws. The case is fine. 4-48939 JR732 (1,500-3,000)
