AN EXCEPTIONAL GERMAN DISH-HILT RAPIER. It has an extraordinary 53” diamond section blade that tapers from 7/16” at the ricasso to the fine point. Two flats of the ricasso are embossed with a sailing ship makers mark. The dish-guard is 6-1/2” dia. with deep 16 pointed star incised decorations and a circumferential ring around the outer edge. This is a very unusual feature used for trapping the opponits blade. The handle is fine, braided wire wrapped with a tiny cross guard with fluted finials. The pommel is solid iron with incised diamond decorations and a tiny knob at the butt. This is reportedly the longest such rapier on record and the only known example. CONDITION: Fine, the blade retains a light gray/brown patina with some scattered extremely fine pitting. The handguard is mostly a light gray patina, the handle and handle material are intact with some light rust. 4-48937 JR724 (3,500-5,000)
