ASSEMBLED LOT OF MISCELLANEOUS 19TH CENTURY ITEMS.

ASSEMBLED LOT OF MISCELLANEOUS 19TH CENTURY ITEMS. This lot consists of an early 19th century or possibly a late 18th century small walnut four leg chest 13” long, 8-1/4” wide by 6” deep with 3” legs. The corners appear to have pegged mortise and tennon joints with a raised dust seal edge around the top. It has very early iron cabinet lock with iron escutcheon. It also has two iron straps across the top with iron corners on the lid. The lid has two or three cracks. The bottom of the box appears to be poplar wood with nicely hand beveled edges. The interior has a small box shelf mortised to the inside on one end. The top front edge is stamped in one corner “1857” and along the front in the opposite corner “WILMINGTON NC”. The stamping is apparently much later than the date of manufacture of the box. The box is fine with a wonderful old patina with some minor damage around the hinges and front lock. Also with this lot is a very early tarred canvas covered book that measures 12-1/4” by 7-1/2” and consists of a couple hundred pages. With the notation on the front “PAY BOOK” and something else that has been scratched out. This appears to be an original Coast Guard pay book with dates from the 1820’s through the 1840’s. Also included is the following: A very early meerschaum cigarette holder with two carved foxes, a silver band and amber mouth piece with case, small crack at the stem, case slightly damaged but fine; 1815 edition of the biography of Gen. George Washington, 108 pages, good spine, yellowed paper, slightly foxed and stained; Shipping bill dated 1857, good; Court document from Cumberland County, Fayetteville, NC, dated 1849, yellowed, but fine; Early hand blown greenish bubble glass inkwell, fine; Sail makers needle marked “Made In England”; Two original “Lucifer” block matches; One handmade ivory dice, one edge damaged; Two-hole bone button; 1832 capped Liberty half dollar, worn; 1857 seated Liberty quarter dollar, worn; 1861 two and one half dollar gold piece, repaired edge, fine; and a modern copper bracket lamp holder, burner & globe, fine. 4-48912 JR734 (2,000-2,500)
