REAR ADMIRAL’S FLAG FROM ADMIRAL DEWEY’S FLAG SHIP OLYMPIA. Red fabric flag, 5’10” x 4’10”, hand stitched, with two 5-point hand stitched white stars, approximately 14” in diameter. The background material is wool bunting and the stars are cotton. The back edge is bound with a coarse cotton cloth, having a braided 3/8” rope piping sewn in the edge. This binding is stenciled “Rear Admiral :No. 4 Navy Yard New York Oct 1894”. This flag was purchased by Frank Bannerman in June of 1900 at a Boston Navy Yard surplus sale along with other flags from the Olympia. It remained in Bannerman’s Museum until December 1972 when it was sold to George Starke, who has in turn sold it to the consignor. This flag was surely used by Admiral George Dewey when the Olympia was his flag ship after the Battle of Manila, when he was promoted to Rear Admiral, for the four months before he was promoted to Admiral of the Navy by Act of Congress. This flag is accompanied by copies of correspondence between the Boston Navy Yard and Frank Bannerman regarding the June 5th 1900 “Condemned Stores” auction dated May 23, June 13, and June 25th. Also accompanied by a copy of the original bill of sale (the original of which is included with another lot in this auction). Also accompanying is the copy of the auction catalogue as well as the cover of a July 1907 Bannerman’s catalogue and a page from that catalogue discussing the acquisition and display of the flags purchased from the Olympia Surplus Property Auction. Also accompanies is a black painted metal document box, 16-1/4” x 11-3/4” x 6-1/2”, which contains the flag. CONDITION: The flag has many moth holes and several repairs and is in delicate condition, in need of preservation. The red background is bright, the stars are soiled and stained. The document box is fine. 4-48986 JR777 (1,000-2,000)
