SCARCE WILLIAM JACKSON BOWIE KNIFE. Fine early Bowie with 9-13/16″ spear-point blade by 1-1/2″ wide in front of the ricasso marked on the left side “RIO GRANDE CAMP KNIFE”. The left ricasso is marked, “WM JACKSON & CO / SHEAF ISLAND WORKS / SHEFFIELD”. It has a 1/8″ thick German silver elliptical shaped hand guard with fine 2-pc rugged stag grip scales secured with German silver pins. There is a leather washer at the front end next to the hand guard and the heel of the right side has been cleverly repaired. Accompanied by what appears to be its orig brown leather sheath with belt loop. CONDITION: Worn and used with a small belly in the cutting edge. Blade retains a smooth metal colored patina with some fine pitting. All the legends are clear. Handles are fine with the noted repair. Sheath is dry and crackled, missing the tip, if it ever had one, and shows substantial hard wear. Stitching around the front of belt loop is loose. 4-57645-1 (1,500-2,500)
