FREDERICK STUART CHURCH (American, 1842-1924) THE CIRCLE OF EVOLUTION. Large oil on canvas depiction of a circle of evolutionary stages. Starting out as a tadpole in water, the circle of images go from tadpole to frog to salamander to chimpanzee to early man ending in five stages of cultural man including Eskimo, Native American, Conquistador, Explorer to the end figure of a well dressed sophisticated gentleman. The circle figures are seen against a lush tropical “Garden of Eden” background. Signed upper left “F S Church” with copyright sign and date which appears to be “1880”. Housed in a period gesso decorated frame. SIZE: 40″ x 30″. CONDITION: Relined, extensive craquelure, inpainting. 9-92801 (4,500-6,500)
