EXTREMELY RARE LAWRENCE BREECHLOADING RIFLE. Cal. 54. 26” rnd bbl, number 1559 stamped on the stock between the lockplate and frame is from the U.S. Cartridge Company collection. The left side of the bbl retainer is marked “R.S. LAWRENCE / PATENT / APPLIED / FOR “ which dates it before January 6, 1852 when the patent was issued. “WINDSOR VT.” is stamped on top of the bbl. A copy of a patent paper accompanies the lot. This gun has several interesting features, some used on other guns made by Robbins & Lawrence. The bbl release mechanism is used on the Robbins & Lawrence pepperbox. The stock and buttplate, including the nameplate on the left side, are from a Jennings First Model rifle. Brooks catalogue (The Brooks collection was purchased by U.S.C.G for exhibition at the 1903 World’s Fair) lists this as a gift from R. S. Lawrence. CONDITION: 50% thinning brown on the bbl, faint traces on the bbl retainer and trigger guard. Faint casehardening colors on the lockplate and receiver. Stock has been broken at the wrist, repaired, lightly sanded and refinished. Action is fine. 4-52566 FS6 (8,000-15,000)
