JOHN WILLIAMSON (American, 1826-1885) RIVER RAFT. Oil on canvas mounted on cardboard scene shows a figure in a small raft at edge of river with grass covered bank with grazing sheep under large trees. Mountains are seen in background along the river under a pink hue sky. Signed lower left “Jay Williamson”. Backing cardboard has a large cutout which we believe has the initials of the artist and “Pinx” with a date. Housed in a black molded wood frame with gold liner. SIZE: 9-1/2″ x 15-1/2″. CONDITION: The name on front floureces under blacklight which may indicate that it is a later addition. Back of the canvas has been either waxed or sprayed with varnish and attached to a heavy cardboard. There are three small areas which have small chips and bulge or indicate a tear or puncture but are hidden behind cardboard. Craquelure. 9-92640 (15,000-20,000)
