RARE EARLY SPECIAL ORDER DELUXE WINCHESTER MODEL 1886 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 40-82. SN 20044. Spectacular early rifle with 26” oct bbl, full magazine, unusual front sight blade that appears homemade and a semi-buckhorn rear sight with Lyman tang sight. It has beautifully grained about 3X wood with “H” style checkered forearm and checkered straight grip stock with blued crescent buttplate. The length of pull is about 12-1/2”. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter identifying this rifle as having a “2-1/2” pull”, probably a typo intended to be 12-1/2”. It also states that the stock is 3/4” shorter than regular and that the forearm and grip are “thinner than regular”. The letter indicates that it was shipped July 23, 1888. CONDITION: Extremely fine plus. Overall the metal retains 97-98% strong bright original blue with minor fine edge wear and a few scattered light nicks and scratches and some scattered very fine surface spotting on the receiver. Wood is sound with several small light nicks and scratches and retains most of its original bright piano varnish finish. Lever retains 60-70% bright case colors with the balance turned silver. Hammer retains about 95% case colors. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. 4-52473 JR257 (12,500-17,500)
