FINE EARLY BUFFALO HUNTER’S KNIFE SET. Wonderful early & unusual Buffalo hunter/skinner’s knife set & belt. Knife carrier is about 9″ high & tapers from about 2-1/5″ at the bottom to 3-3/8″ at top . Covered with leather & wood lined, leather covering is machine sewn at bottom & along side seam it has six rows of brass mixed with iron tacks with a 1/2″ strap around top, also with brass & iron tacks with carrying straps secured with modern Phillips head screws. Wood lining is very unusual in that it is cut out in a six-pointed star pattern to hold six knives. Carrying straps are sewn to a 2″ wide harness leather belt with machine sewn billets & harness buckles with a loop on one side, probably for sharpening steel. Carrier has seven knives including two J. Russell Green River skinners, a Green River butcher knife, three very early knives that show extreme hard wear & a small hunting size knife that apparently does not belong with this set. CONDITION: Leather is well oiled & supple, although belt is very crackled & a little fragile. Knife holder is dark & stained but mostly intact. Two carrying straps are modern replacements. The three Green River knives are fine with other three knives very worn & used. Small knife is fine. 4-57676 JR529 (2,000-3,000)
