*MASSIVE HUNTER ARMS L.C. SMITH 8GA SIDE BY SIDE SHOTGUN. SN 42701. Cal. 8ga. 32″ Damascus steel bbls with checkered tapered rib and sgl brass sighting bead, dbl triggers and extractors. Receiver is not marked for grade but Cody Firearms Factsheets indicates it to be a grade 2. The engraving pattern, however, is an oval with 2 quail on left lock and oval with 2 woodcocks on right lock, and moderate arabesque scroll at each point of the locks. There is a small amount of foliate scroll on other parts of the receiver and also engraving around trigger plate screw and on the bow of the trigger guard. Mounted with streaky semi-fancy walnut with checkered fore end with black tip insert and circular hard rubber insert with portrait of a setter’s head. Checkered pistol grip with hard rubber grip cap, 14-1/4″ to hard rubber buttplate. CONDITION: Good to very good. Damascus bbls have turned a dark patina with a light surface coat of pitting but the Damascus pattern is still very visible. Receiver shows evidence of case coloring but has many areas that have darkened and appears to have a coating of very old varnish over parts of it. Wood is solid with numerous nicks and scratches, dings and dents, and flaking of the finish. There is a 1/4″ chip missing from the toe, which shows evidence to have already been repaired. This particular SN is not listed in the Brophy L.C. Smith book but a Cody Firearms Museum Factsheet identifies it as a grade 2 8ga with 32″ bbls and the next two numbers are listed as grade 2 32″ 8ga. Apparently there were only between 30-40 8ga Smiths ever manufactured. Mechanics are good as it locks up tight and bores have only a few scattered pits. 4-33671 BDT71 (17,500-27,000)
