*SPECTACULAR EXHIBITION QUALITY WINCHESTER MODEL 1895 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 30 US (30-40). SN 30512. Nickel-plated with gold trim and bird’s eye maple wood. This fabulous rifle was, according to museum records, an exhibition piece from the time it was made in 1901 until about 1912. It has 28” rnd bbl, pedestal front sight and semi-buckhorn rear sight. The lever, hammer and bolt are all gold plated with the balance of the metal nickel-plated. It is beautifully fitted with fine Birdseye maple wood, having a black insert schnable tip forearm and straight stock with crescent buttplate. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter identifying this rifle as found, except the letter indicates that the buttplate was gold plated and there is no mention of the bolt at all. These two items apparently were reversed in the plating process with the bolt getting gold and the buttplate nickel. The records list numerous transactions for return and repairs as well as consignments to various companies and shows with the last entry being April 17, 1912. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Overall retains virtually all of its original finish to both metal and wood with some slight pimpling and wear on the lever. Wood is sound with some slight oil staining on the rear edge of the forearm. Mechanics are fine, brilliant shiny bore. 4-52561 JR306 (15,000-30,000)
