FANCIFUL PAINT DECORATED DOCUMENT BOX. This 19th century pine box features wonderful paint decoration on four sides. The top with a fanciful, large, colorful, basket of flowers in a framed and double pin-stripe border with fanciful finish. The front with a similar fanciful basket and colorful arrangement of flowers and also framed similarly to the top. Each of the ends with colorful bold large sprays of flowers and decoration. The backside of the box paint decorated with a series of sponged dots. The interior of the box painted white. The top attached to the base with old wire hinges. Recently found in an old Massachusetts collection. SIZE: 12-1/2” w x 6-1/4” d x 4-1/2 h. CONDITION: Structurally sound and paint generally very strong. Originally had a simple leather antique heart attached to the front, now missing. The box is nailed rather than dovetail construction and there are a couple of small splits on the front that occurred at the time of making of the box and originate essentially from the point at which the nails were used. A wonderful bold and fanciful decorated piece of early Americana. 9-29463 (1850-2850)
