SMALL LONG CARVED MASONIC WALL SHELF. Probably late 19th Century. Wonderful Masonic wall shelf with dividers and square with carved and gilded “G” or “C” in the center. Also has decorative Masonic columns at the top. The underside of the shelf has a distinct carved Maltese cross. I do not believe that the Maltese cross is a symbol associated with the Masons; however, it is a symbol of the 20th Maine Unit that was led by Joshua Chamberlain, and became famous as a result of their most desperate stand at Little Round Top on the third day of Gettysburg. It is possible that this shelf could have been made for a Mason who was a member of the 20th Maine. This is obviously only speculation on our behalf, but the Maltese cross indicates something. SIZE: 19-3/4” h x approximately 11” w. CONDITION: Old patina, structurally good. The back plate has a split on either side directly behind the shelf at the level of the shelf, is somewhat hidden by the shelf, otherwise finish old with craquelure and dark crazing. 9-29462 (250-450)
