OUTSTANDING AND EXTENSIVE CORRESPONDENCE COLLECTION OF MARK T. MCKEE, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE NATIONAL EMPLOYMENT COMMISSION OF THE AMERICAN LEGION FROM THE EARLY 1930’S. This collection was found in a barn in Michigan in an unopened wood crate measuring 14-1/2” h x 28” w x 21-1/2” d which we believe had been sealed for at least 50 years. It contains thousands of letters to and from major industrialists, millionaires, businesses and political leaders requesting and receiving donations on behalf of the legions effort to help in the Veteran employment effort. This effort was recognized by President Hoover on April 4th, 1932 and was praised by the President for being an instrumental part in the legions effort to place 1 million unemployed Veterans back into the employment market. As of this date 432,460 men were placed in 2185 communities. The lot of correspondence is comprised of three file boxes and another box. Most of the returned correspondence are on company or personal letterhead and involve most of the most influential people and businesses in the country. Most of the letters are dated 1932 and signed by their respective Presidents or Executive Officers. There also is a quantity of original telegrams which document this effort. This untouched treasure trove opens a window into a difficult time in our history and focuses on one persons effort and success at alleviating one of the nations biggest challenges. It shows the generosity of the countries successful businesses and people as well as shedding light on those who were not. This should be interesting to both the autograph and paper collector as well as the historian. Though we have examined the collection we have not had the opportunity to examine each piece of paper for its content or autograph potential. We encourage any interested party to examine the collection and determine its content potential. CONDITION: Most letters are complete but have traces of annotations. There are rusted staple marks to the top margins and paper shows age of the time. 9-29382 (5000-10000)
