OUTSTANDING ENGRAVED COIN SILVER MUG BY LINCOLN & FOSS, BOSTON. Lincoln & Foss worked in Boston, Massachusetts Circa 1850. Bottom also marked “Pure Silver Coin”. Tapered mug has hollow curved handle and molded top and bottom edge. A presentation area engraved with flowers and leaves surrounding a cartouche which states “Robert Gould Shaw Sturtevant from R. G. Shaw May 3rd, 1853”. It is possible that this mug was a gift from Robert Gould Shaw to a relative or friend named Robert Gould Shaw Sturtevant after himself. Shaw would have been 16 years old and coming from a wealthy family, this would be a proper gift for naming ones child after him. Robert Gould Shaw was son of a prominent Boston abolitionist family. He attended Harvard University and joined the 7th New York Regiment and marched with it to the defense of Washington in April 1861. Shaw raised and commanded the first regiment of black troops organized in a northern state. He led the 54th on an assault of Confederate Battery Wagner and he died in that pursuit. He was buried in a common grave with his black enlisted men. This assault led by Shaw is memorialized on the Shaw Memorial which stands in the Boston Commons in Massachusetts which was executed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. SIZE: 3-3/4” h. CONDITION: Very good. 9-28834 (1000-2000)
