VERY RARE AMES CAVALRY SWORD W/USER IDENTIFICATION. 35-3/16” dbl fuller blade marked “AMES MFg Co / CHICOPEE. / MASS” on the left ricasso “U.S / JH / 1859” on the right. Left side of the guard is stamped “J.F. MILLIGAN.” Milligan has not been researched. Brass parts of the hilt were gilded. Throat of the iron scabbard has an inspector’s initial “R”. CONDITION: Sword has been lightly cleaned with some light pitting remaining. About half of the gild on the guard and pommel remains. Leather grip has lost about half of the surface but is still solid. Scabbard has several heavy dents and overall light pitting. 4-48605 FS161 (Lowry Estate) (1,000-1,500)
