OUTSTANDING MINIATURE ON IVORY BY GODFRED MILLER WITH LETTER. Small miniature shows a half portrait of a little girl with curly brown hair, blue eyes and wearing a white dress. Oval form. Set behind a bevel piece of glass in an ornate ormolu/brass inset frame. Little frame is set into a larger rectangular frame with small ring top. It has a black heavy matte with fine craquelure. The girl is Mary Balch and the letter is as follows: “Received New York March 13, 1860 of Mr. Jos P. Balch Ten dollars for painting a miniature of a little girl Godfred Miller Mr. Balch, please send me the receipt of the miniature and let me know how you are pleased with the likeness. If it should need any alteration I can do it at any time. Yours Respectfully Godfred Miller”. We believe this to be Brigadier General Joseph Pope Balch and probably the girl is a family member. Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil war as Major of the 1st Rhode Island Detached Militia. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for “meritorious services”. Miller is listed as a mid-19th Century miniaturist painter (1841-1887). SIZE: Miniature is 1-1/2” x 1-1/4”. Overall is 4-1/4” x 3-1/2”. CONDITION: Very good. 9-29376 (1500-3000)
