CHARLES S. HUMPHREYS (American, Mid 19th Century) PORTRAIT OF AND NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER BY REBECCA S. JINNETT. 1) The large sampler signed and dated 1835 has various family members initials scattered amongst flowers in a sampler bordered by a zigzagging white and green flower vine. Bottom has a three-tiered tree and flower vine with rows surrounding a wreath with two kissing doves. Below which are two large baskets of flowers and there is a bird under the left tree. Housed in a mahogany molded wood frame with a G. Sauter, Philadelphia frame label. SIGHT SIZE: 21-1/2” x 17-1/2”. CONDITION: Large stains and faded. No loss to needlework. 2) Oil on canvas portrait purported to be Rebecca S. Jinnett. She is seated in a red chair wearing a black dress with lace collar and blue scarf. She holds an open book in her lap and wears a pink flower decorated ribbon in her hair. The painting is oval but has incorporated in it on the canvas a painted liner which is signed “C. S. Humphreys 1840”. Housed in an old gilt wood frame, which has the same G. Sauter, Philadelphia label as the needlework. SIZE: 17” x 15”. CONDITION: Relined, craquelure, and a repaired tear, which needs more restoration. Fair. 9-29049 (1500-2500)
