RARE LIDDELL FALLING BLOCK RIFLE. Cal. 33. 29-3/4” octagonal bbl, marked “WM. LIDDELL / ST JOHNSBURY / VT” on the right side of the Sharps-type action. Fragments of a marking at the rear of the bbl appear to be Remington markings. The lock mechanism is internal although the hammer is on the right side. Like the Sharps, the extractor is on the left side of the breechblock and operates the same way. This is a quality made rifle but no other specimens are known. The tang sight is missing. The Beach front sight is mounted on a large platform screwed to the top of the bbl. Pictured in Vermont’s Gunsmiths & Gunmakers, p:2163. CONDITION: Smooth brown patina overall with scattered light pitting. Wood has gouges and scratches with light cracking of the varnish. Also small cracks at the action and buttplate. 4-52498 FS23 (2,000-3,000)
