JOHN CARWITHAM (Engraver, English, First half of the 18th Century) “FORT GEORGE WITH THE CITY OF NEW YORK FROM THE SW.”. Colored engraving with legend having title and “Printed for Carrington Bowles Map & Print Seller at No 69 in St. Paul’s Church Yard, London.”. “I. Carwitham. Sculp.”. The scene shows a large British vessel shooting cannons flying a British flag. Two rowboats of men are seen left of the boat. New York is seen at edge of water. The sky has been colored blue and there is coloring to the men in the boats, the ship and some of the city. Unframed. Several versions of this engraving are known. This appears to be of the earliest vintage having a slightly different title. IMAGE SIZE: 11” x 17-1/4”. Plate indent size is 12” x 17-3/4”. Paper size is 15-1/2” x 20-1/4”. CONDITION: No tears, shadow mark where frame was and overall toning. Very good. 9-29188 (4000-8000)
