RARE CASED PRESENTATION SHARPS SECOND TYPE SINGLE SHOT PERCUSSION PISTOL. Cal. 36. SN 565. One of only about 350 of these rare pistols every made in period 1854-57. It has 6-3/8″ tapered rnd bbl with tiny brass front sight & 2-pc burl walnut grips numbered to pistol. Lockplate & left side of receiver have usual markings. Backstrap is inscribed in period script engraving “Milton Davis” with fancy flourishes at each end. Top of bbl is engraved by same hand “Presented May 6th 1861 By Those Who Knew His Worth”. Accompanied by its orig varnished gold velvet lined walnut casing partitioned in bottom for pistol, a sgl cavity conical bullet mold with Sharps’ style sprue cutter, a copper & brass 3-compartment column shaped oval flask, a rectangular tin for combustible cartridges which now contains a few primer disks, a small rnd tin of Goldmark’s caps, a packet of 36 cal. Hotchkiss Patent skin cartridges by Sage & a small cardboard box with black label which reads “The Balls And Brass Tubes Should Be Kept Well Greased To Insure Accurate Shooting And To Prevent The Tubes From Sticking In The Gun”. This apparently is an orig box for tubes of priming wafers. There is also a long narrow compartment for a wooden cleaning rod. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Overall retains 90-95% orig blue, thinned on bbl & wide part of left side of frame. Top, bottom & right side of frame & recessed area on left side of frame retain about all of its glossy bright orig blue. Hammer retains most of its orig case colors, moderately faded. Lever retains about 50% faded case colors, bright in sheltered areas. Grips are sound & retain most of their orig oil finish. Mechanics are crisp, very bright shiny bore. Casing is also extremely fine with no cracks & only minor storage & handling marks. Lid lining has only a minor spot or two. Bottom lining is moderately faded & lightly soiled with a couple of damage spots from hammer spur & front sight. Mold is bright & clean & flask is near new. Cartridge box has slight loss on label, otherwise is sealed & intact. Priming tube box is soiled & dark and difficult to read.
