SHARPS MID-RANGE TARGET RIFLE #3. Cal. 40-70 Sharps Bottle Neck. SN 156564. Standard sporting rifle with 30″ octagon bbl, globe front sight & Lawrence ladder rear sight. The top tang is drilled for a factory tang sight, which is missing & also has 2 other small plugged holes someone added for another tang sight. It has usual markings on the left side of receiver. It is mounted with nicely figured straight grain walnut with a semi-schnable round forearm with straight stock & coarse checkered steel buttplate. The top of the stock just in front of the buttplate has a plugged slot apparently someone had added a Creedmore base. Accompanied by a copy of a Sharps letter identifying this rifle as a Model 1874 mid-range target rifle #3 in 40 caliber & shipped April 6, 1876 to J.P. Lovell & Sons of Boston, Mass. CONDITION: Fine. No orig finish remains on the metal being an overall mottled silver/brown patina. Lockplate & receiver have traces of case hardening turned silver. Wood is sound with forearm retaining about 50% orig varnish & buttstock about 90%. There is a gouge on the wrist & a couple small dings on the comb. Mechanics are fine. Bright shiny bore with 3 or 4 scattered spots of pitting. 4-56676 JR441 (5,500-7,500)
