RARE FABULOUS HIGH GRADE L.C. SMITH DRILLING. SN 520. Cal. 10 ga X 10 ga 38-55. Spectacular L.C. Smith drilling, the highest grade ever encountered by this cataloguer. It has 30″ fine damascus bbls with concave smooth rib and a small German silver front sight. It has a modified doll’s head rib extension with extractor. Rib is engraved “L.C. Smith Maker Of Baker Gun Syracuse N.Y. Extra Fine Damascus Steel High Proof”. Receiver & lockplates are exquisitely engraved in extremely fine patterns of foliate arabesque scrolls with rosettes around the pins in the lockplates, screws & on each end of the hinge pin. Left front side of receiver has an elliptical vignette of an early trap shooting scene with a number of shooters and several traps, even with a dog in the foreground and “CONEY ISLAND JUNE 1881” in a shallow arc over the top. The opposite side has the same size vignette of a pointer & setter on point in a field scene with a flushing woodcock. Each side of the front end of the frame is engraved “BAKER PAT”. Fences have dbl raised curved shileds of very delicate proportions with a fine edge border. Hammers & proportional areas of the receiver are engraved to match. Receiver has raised reinforcements in elliptical shapes on each side of the bottom. Trigger guard is beautifully engraved to match with two sprays of flowers in the center and top tang is also engraved to match. Top tang has a short folding tang sight mounted on a dovetail and is original to this firearm. Forend iron & escutcheons are engraved to match. Mounted with extraordinary marblecake, honey & chocolate, circassian or French walnut with checkered splinter forearm that has a horn schnable tip with horn diamond inlays around the diamond shaped escutcheons. Stock has a fine checkered pistol grip with oval hard rubber grip cap that has a butterfly shaped steel inlay that is engraved to match the receiver. LOP 14-1/4″ over a diamond checkered hard rubber buttplate with overlaid engraved heel & toe plates. Bottom of stock has a tiny gold oval engraved “PRESENTED / TO / N.Y.S.S.A. / 1881”. These initials are believed to represent the New York Skeet Shooting Association which still exists. Stock has an extremely clever & professional repair through the wrist. This extraordinary drilling would make a wonderful addition to anyone’s collection. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbls retain about 90% orig brown damascus pattern with deep dark brown on the steel rifle bbl. Receiver & lockplates retain 75-80% strong case colors, brighter on sides of receiver & lockplates and in sheltered areas with the bottom front faded to silver. Stock, repaired as noted, and forearm retain most of their fine old restored finish with minor nicks & scratches. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bores. 4-32048 JR360 (8,000-12,000)
