*EXTREMELY RARE L.C. SMITH DELUXE GRADE DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUN. SN FWE65990. Cal. 12 ga. This beautiful shotgun, one of only twenty made in this gauge in the period 1913-1944, has 28” bbls choked FULL/FULL with tapered concave matted rib, sgl bead, crossbolt rib extension, ejectors and Hunter One-Trigger. The top rib is engraved “MADE TO ORDER / BY THE / HUNTER ARMS CO. INC. / FULTON. N.Y.” with an engraved gold band separating the rib extension which has “L.C. SMITH DeLuxe GRADE” in flat gold on rib extension. Mounted with very highly figured flame & shell grain Claro walnut with fleur-de-lis carved & checkered beavertail forearm and straight hand stock carved & checkered to match, 14” over a leather covered pad. Receiver & lockplates are beautifully engraved in the extreme with full coverage intertwined foliate arabesque patterns with raised gold vignettes of two flying geese in a marsh scene on left lockplate, two bird dogs on point in a field scene on right lockplate with raised gold roses on front sides of receiver. Bottom of receiver has two raised gold flowers with stems & leaves and a raised gold partridge on trigger plate. Back of fences and around top of receiver have a fine raised rib. Back of fences, top of receiver, opening lever, trigger bow & sides of bbl over chambers have raised gold flower blossoms, stems & leaves. Engraving patterns extend about 2-1/2” up over chambers of bbls and about 1-1/4” from muzzles. Forend iron is engraved to match on inside & outside with multi-colored gold flower blossom stems & leaves with thumb wheel plate also engraved. Trigger bow is filed on edges to match engraving patterns and bottom tang is engraved to match. Bore diameter: left – .728, right – .727. Bore restrictions: left – .040, right – .039. Wall thickness: left – .027, right – .027. Drop at heel: 1-7/8”, drop at comb: 1-3/8”. Weight: 7 lbs. 8.32 oz. This shotgun is listed on p. 213 Appendix B by serial number in the book L.C. Smith Shotguns, Brophy. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum fact sheet identifying this shotgun as having been shipped Aug. 30, 1924 to Order No. 10523 with the purchaser listed as S.J. Giles. There is a notation “There appear to be four different return and repair orders for this serial number.” CONDITION: Very fine. Bbls retain most of an exceptionally fine re-black finish. Receiver & lockplates retain 75-80% subtle orig case colors turning silver on bottom front and edges, strong in sheltered areas. Wood is sound showing moderate wear with minor nicks & scratches and retains a fine hand rubbed oil finish. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bores. 4-33670 JR194 (75,000-100,000)
