EXTREMELY RARE BAILEY BREECH LOADING RIFLE. Cal. 41. 21” hexagonal brass bbl. The action is lightly engraved. Bailey, Ripley & Smith patent No. 1084 was issued to Lebbeus Bailey of Portland, Maine, John B. Ripley of Claremont, and William B. Smith of Cornish, N.H. Their patent was for an “Improved Water-Proof Rifle” and covered not only the action but the steel cartridges, magazine tube, and priming mechanism associated with it. A specimen cartridge accompanies the gun. It is slightly too small, but shows all of the features of the patent. A copy of the patent also accompanies the gun. CONDITION: Traces of blue on the action. Bbl has been sanded to remove corrosion. Stock appears to have most of its original varnish but has cracks along the magazine tube. 4-52708 FS125 (5,000-8,000)
