*EXTREMELY RARE L.C. SMITH DELUXE GRADE DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUN. SN 202812. Cal. 20 ga. This fabulous shotgun, one of only eight made in the period 1913-1946, has 28” vent rib bbls with sgl bead, crossbolt rib extension, ejectors and Hunter-1 trigger. Rib is marked “MADE TO ORDER / BY THE / HUNTER ARMS CO, INC. / FULTON. N.Y.” and has “L.C. SMITH DELUXE GRADE” in gold on rib extension. Bbl flats, ejectors & bbl faces are beautifully jeweled with the serial number engraved along with “DE.LUXE”. The water table and standing breech are jeweled and engraved identically. Mounted with spectacular center crotch cut flame & shell grain American walnut with large beavertail forearm that has carved fleur-de-lis & ribbon patterns with nearly full coverage checkering. It has a straight hand stock with matching carved & checkered wrist, 13-7/8” over an orig serrated hard rubber buttplate. Receiver, lockplates and all appended metal are wonderfully engraved with spectacular intertwined foliate arabesque patterns and fabulous raised gold inlays with vignettes of two bird dogs and a flying pheasant in a field scene on left side, a flying grouse on front end of lock, three flying ducks in a marsh scene on right side with two flying pigeons in a small vignette on right side. A wonderfully detailed flying woodcock on trigger plate with drapes of raised gold leaves, vines & berries in two colors. Back of fences & around top of receiver has a raised narrow rib with back edge of fences having three clusters of pine needles with two pine cones in 2-color gold. Top of receiver & opening lever also have the leaf, vine & berry raised gold inlays. Opening lever thumb tab is pierced filed. Top tang has “SAFE” in gold with gold plated safety. Trigger guard is engraved to match and trigger bow has “JN. Belcher” inlaid in flat gold script. The engraving extends about 1-1/2” over chamber areas of bbls which also have the leaf, vine & berry raised gold inlays. There are small decorative patterns at muzzles also. Bore diameter: left – .617, right – .617. Bore restrictions: left – .027, right -.014. Wall thickness: left – .031, right – .031. Drop at heel: 2-1/4”, drop at comb: 1-3/8”. Weight: 6 lbs. 7.68 oz. This shotgun is listed by serial number in Appendix B, p. 213 in L.C. Smith Shotguns, Brophy. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum fact sheet which full identifies this shotgun as having been started Jan. 5, 1943 and shipped Nov. 15, 1943 to Order #53943 to Kerr’s Sporting Goods. Also accompanied by a fine Huey oak & leather, burgundy ultra-suede lined case with brass corners, a maker’s label inside lid and compartmented in bottom for shotgun, a 2-piece brass & wood cleaning rod, two turn screws, a brush and cleaning rod handle. It also has a nickeled square oiler, a screw-top parts box and a pair of snap caps. A covered compartment in the right end has cleaning implements. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbls retain most of their orig strong factory blue, slightly thinned over forearm area. Receiver & lockplates retain most of their subtle case colors, slightly silvered around edges of lockplates. Trigger guard & bottom tang retain most of its strong orig blue, slightly thinned in finger grasping area. Wood is sound with only very minor handling & storage mars and retains virtually all of its fine orig finish. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bores.
