REVOLUTIONARY PERIOD BROWN BESS MUSKET. NSN. 82 Cal. 42-1/2” rnd bbl. London proof marks at the rear of the bbl with “diamond / IU” maker’s mark in between. The lockplate has light floral engraving but no markings. The 7” banana lockplate is early with no bridle on the frizzen. The touchhole has been bushed with brass with chisel staked surrounding area. The sear spring is a replacement. The stock has a distinct tiger stripe and is probably maple. The flat sideplate has been shortened on the front end. The front lockplate screw is stripped. There is a small brass band around the front of the forearm. The ramrod, top jaw and screw are replacements. This appears to be a Revolutionary Period American assembled musket. CONDITION: Brown patina overall with moderate pitting around the breech. Wood is chipped out around the lockplate and has several cracks at the buttplate and chips along the forearm and bbl tang, with insect damage in the latter.
