INSCRIBED CIVIL WAR CONNECTICUT OFFICER’S NON-REGULATION STAFF & FIELD SWORD. A Solingen made sword signed “P.D.L.” in an oval cartouch in the English style presented to Captain Bixby, 18th Connecticut Infantry. The undecorated, lightly curved, single edged blade measures 32″ long. The hilt is of silver plated cast brass with a half basket guard similar to English regulations with a large oval panel containing a separately applied cast American eagle and shield surmounting “US.” The down turned quillon has an applied 5-point star. The backside of the half basket guard has a hinged counterguard. The grip is of sharkskin covered wood with double strand twisted silver-plated wire. Bird’s head pommel and backstrap with stylized acanthus leaf decoration down the back. The scabbard is of German silver plated steel, two carrying rings and an iron drag. Between the mounts is engraved: Capt. F. G. Bixby/ Co. D 18th Conn. Vols. Franklin G. Bixby was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 18th Connecticut Infantry on December 9, 1863 reaching the rank of Captain in mid-1864. This regiment, organized in Norwich, served in Baltimore, Maryland until May 1863, thence moving to Winchester where most of the regiment was captured receiving parole and exchange in October 1863. The regiment remained in the Shenandoah Valley from Staunton to Harper’s Ferry and Martinsburg throughout the remainder of its service. The 18th served in a number of smaller battles and occupations during the final 18 months of the war. The regiment lost 4 officers and 67 enlisted men in combat. CONDITION: Very good. The sword blade has aged to a medium grey appearance with only a few dark spots. The hilt is tarnished and uncleaned, the grip shows light wear but is tight and strong. The German silver plated scabbard has dulled from age but has only one small dent on the backside and surface scratching from use. A very attractive non-regulation sword inscribed to a Connecticut officer. 4-48549 CW03 (3,000-5,000)
