INSCRIBED VERMONT U.S. MODEL 1850 FOOT OFFICER’S SWORD MANUFACTURED BY AMES. A regulation standard U.S. Model 1850 Foot Officer’s Sword manufactured by the Ames Manufacturing Company, Chicopee, Massachusetts, and so marked on the blade and the top mount of the scabbard, presented to Major Tyler, 4th Vermont Infantry. The blade is 32.25″ long and was manufactured by Collins having the date “1862″ and the inspector’s initials “G.G.S.” stamped on the ricasso. The blade was etched by Ames with a “U.S.”, a spread winged eagle and standard Ames pattern floral and military decoration. Signed “Ames…” at the ricasso. The hilt is of gilt cast brass in standard form, with a grip of sharkskin covered wood and double strand twisted brass wire. The scabbard is of blued steel with brass furniture. The top mount is engraved: Maj. Jno. Curtis Tyler/4th Reg.t Vt. Vols/Presented by his Uncle/J.W. Tyler of Boston. The 4th Regiment Vermont Volunteer Infantry was organized in Brattleboro September 21, 1861 and saw hard fighting service throughout the Civil War. Major John Curtis Tyler resigned his commission as Major of the Regiment on January 20, 1862. During his term of service, Major Tyler served at Camp Griffin in the Defenses of Washington. Following his resignation, this regiment went on to fight in some the Civil War’s bloodiest and most important engagements. He must have seen what was coming! CONDITION: Excellent. This sword shows wonderful care and little use. The blade retains its armory brightness with frosty etching. The hilt and all of the brass furniture retains nearly 90% of its original gilt. The steel scabbard shows faded original blue. Numerous minor dents mar the scabbard drag. A wonderful Ames foot officer’s sword with a dated Collins & Co. blade in superb condition overall. An interesting inscription on the sword by his Uncle. 4-48618 CW04 (3,500-6,500)
