DANIEL RIDGWAY KNIGHT (American, 1839-1924) THE ROSE GARDEN. Spectacular oil on canvas scene shows a young maiden in striped dress with white top and lavender apron. She stands amongst a large colorful group of rose bushes. She carries a blue sack over her shoulder which is filled with prunings. She gazes to her right with a pleasant smile and has a golden kerchief in her hair. The background scene shows a large river with tree lined banks and far off cultivated fields. A glimpse of a house is seen below the garden. Lavender shaded clouds complete the picture. Signed lower right. “Ridgway Knight, Paris”. Housed in its original magnificent pierced gesso decorated gilt frame with gilt liner. Frame having leaf scroll and flower decoration. SIZE: 22″ x 18-1/2″. CONDITION: Very good. There are two minor vertical scratches on the top border which were caused by the canvas slipping in the frame. These two scratches have been lightly inpainted but probably should be professionally filled and inpainted. 9-92577 (75,000-125,000)
