NEW YORK INSCRIBED U.S. MODEL 1850 FOOT OFFICER’S SWORD. The sword is a regulation style U.S. Model 1850 Foot Officer’s Sword manufactured in Solingen, Germany by Eisenhauer and presented to Lt. Miller, 167th New York Infantry. A little fancier grade than standard, this sword has a 31.5″ single edged blade, slightly curved with etched “U.S.”, eagle and a stand of flags as the principal decorations surrounded by floral sprays and military trophies. Signed “Eisenhauer” near the ricasso. The hilt is regulation standard of gilt cast brass with shark skin grip with triple wound twisted brass wire. The pommel cap is enhanced with additional engraved decorations. The scabbard is of black leather with gilt brass mounts decorated with shields, chevrons and floral sprays having a shield shaped presentation panel on the top mount. Within the panel is engraved: Presented to/Lieut, C.M. Miller/By Co. B. NYSV/167th Reg.t/Hudson/1862. The 167th Regiment NYSV failed to complete its muster in 1862 and the troops enlisted were transferred to the 159th Regiment NYSV where Lieutenant C.M. Miller is not listed as an officer. It is likely that Lt. Miller resigned once the 167th failed to meet its enlistment quota. Further research may reveal the career of C.M. Miller. CONDITION: Excellent. The sword shows little or no use, with an armory bright blade and superb frosty etching. Almost 90% of the gilt remains on all brass parts and the grip and leather scabbard shows only slight wear from storage and handling. This officer’s military record aside, this is a wonderful example of a Civil War inscribed foot officer’s sword in tip top condition. 4-48594 CW02 (3,000-4,000)
