HIGH GRADE PRESENTATION U.S. MODEL 1850 STAFF AND FIELD OFFICER’S SWORD MANUFACTURED BY AMES AND INSCRIBED TO A NEW YORK OFFICER. A regulation style 1850 Staff and Field Officer’s Sword manufactured by the Ames Manufacturing Company, Chicopee, Mass. and so marked on the blade and back of the scabbard. Presented to Captain Decker of the 143rd New York Infantry. The sword has a single edged, slightly curved blade measuring 33″ long with etched decorations including “US” an American eagle, military trophies and floral vines. The half basket hilt of high quality gilt cast brass conforms to regulation. The grip is of silver wound with triple twisted brass wire. The scabbard is of gilded brass with fancy carrying rings and engraved floral decorations and a large sunburst containing a stand of flags, liberty cap, drum, knapsack and shield between the middle mount and the drag. Between the top and middle scabbard mounts is engraved: Presented to/Capt. Geo. H. Decker/by/The Soldiers of his Co. (H) 143 Reg’t NYSV/As a token of our esteem/June 26th 1865. George H. Decker was commissioned Captain on October 8, 1862 and served with this regiment until their discharge on July 20, 1865. The 143rd was organized at Monticello, New York in October 1862 and served in the defenses of Washington until being moved to Virginia, then participating in battles at Fort Wagner, throughout coastal South Carolina, Bermuda Hundred, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, the Crater, Chaffin’s Farm, Fair Oaks, Fort Fisher, Goldsboro and finally to the surrender of General Johnson’s army. The regiment lost 3 officers and 126 men in combat. CONDITION: Excellent. The blade is bright with frosty etching having only tiny dark spots here and there. The hilt is superb retaining 80% of its gold wash. The scabbard is bright with about 85% of its original gilt. There are two minor dents to the backside of the scabbard.
