RARE C.B. HOLDEN 3RD MODEL OPEN SIDE SINGLE SHOT RIFLE. Cal. 44 RF Long. SN 84. Referred to as “Holden’s Patent 1862 Rifle”, this rifle has a 24-3/8” oct bbl, fixed dovetail front sight and Holden’s short ladder 2-position rear sight. The top flat between the frame and rear sight is marked “C.B. HOLDEN’S PATENT / APRIL 1862”. The bore has five wide lands with narrow grooves, conventional rifling, and left hand twist. It has an iron receiver and lever with an iron crescent buttplate with faceted tang. The wood is straight-grained uncheckered American walnut with splinter forearm and straight stock. This unusual rifle is made with the entire right side of the receiver open exposing two finger loops, which are actually the striker and bolt. The striker can be operated at any time, however in order to open the bolt one must first open the lever which disengages the lock. Then the bolt can be retracted and the empty case extracted. When a fresh cartridge is inserted the bolt is manually pushed forward and the lever closed before the trigger will engage. No other safety is present. There is a sling loop attached to the front of the trigger guard. Accompanied by a copy of a brief biography of C.B. Holden. CONDITION: Good to very good. Metal retains an overall mottled silver-brown patina with fine light surface etching. Stock has two holes from an old tang sight and a crack down the top of the wrist with moderate handling and use marks and a gouge on the right side of the comb. Wood retains generous amounts of original finish under a coating of old varnish. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore with some orange peel pitting. 4-52801 JR644 (2,500-4,000)
