VERY RARE C.B. HOLDEN 1ST MODEL OPEN SIDE SINGLE SHOT RIFLE. Cal. 44 RF Long. SN 35. Referred to as “Holden’s Patent 1862 Rifle”, it has a 24” oct bbl, Jack front sight with silver bead and Holden’s short ladder 2-position rear sight. The top flat between the frame and rear sight is marked “C.B. HOLDEN’S PATENT / APRIL 1862”. The bore has five wide lands with narrow grooves, conventional rifling, and left hand twist. It has a silver plated bronze receiver and lever with a silver plated bronze crescent buttplate with faceted tang. The top of the receiver has three plugged holes, which seem to have no purpose. The wood is unusual ebony with splinter forearm and straight stock. The forearm has a pewter nosecap with inlaid keyhole design. This unusual rifle is made with the entire right side of the receiver open exposing two finger loops, which are actually the striker and bolt. The striker can be operated at any time, however in order to open the bolt one must first open the lever which disengages the lock. Then the bolt can be retracted and the empty case extracted. When a fresh cartridge is inserted the bolt is manually pushed forward and the lever closed before the trigger will engage. No other safety is present. There is a sling loop attached to the front of the trigger guard. Accompanied by a copy of a brief biography of C.B. Holden. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl retains a smooth even blue-brown patina with scattered light surface rust. Receiver and lever retain traces of silver-plating in the very sheltered areas and retain a medium mustard patina, as does the buttplate. Breechblock and striker retain most of their bright original case colors, the bolt is missing the extractor. Serial number appears on the right side of the lever and bottom of the bbl under the forearm, while the number “25” appears on the trigger. Stock has a hairline on the right side of the wrist, otherwise is sound and retains most of a fine restored finish. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore with a few scattered spots of light pitting. 4-52799 JR643 (4,000-7,000)
