EXTREMELY RARE C.B. HOLDEN MINIATURE MODEL 62 OPEN SIDE RIFLE. Cal. 32 RF. NSN. Most unusual little rifle, about 3/4 size of the standard Model 62. It has a 28” lightweight tapered oct bbl with tiny globe front sight and tiny 3” long open rear sight. The bore has three wide lands and grooves, conventional rifling with left hand twist. It has very highly figured 2-pc uncheckered American walnut stock and forearm with long slim forearm having a pewter nosecap with keyhole inlay and a single miniature wedge through silver oval escutcheons that are screwed in place. The buttstock has straight grip with crescent buttplate with faceted tang and a long toeplate. It is a removable butt stock by means of a small trap in the buttplate which exposes a square key shank which, when unscrewed, allows the stock to be removed. The stock is made in two halves and apparently contains the main spring for the striker. The receiver is a miniature of the usual open side with the entire right side open to expose two finger holes. These are, in fact, the striker and bolt. The striker can be operated at any time, but for the bolt to be withdrawn, the lever must be open then the bolt move to the rear, which extracts the spent case and allows reloading. The bolt is then manually moved forward, the lever closed and then fired in the normal manner. The top rear of the receiver has an integral tang sight post with a delicate, extremely clever miniature sight that is adjustable with very fine precision. The receiver has “C.B. HOLDEN PATENT, SEPT. 1ST. 1862” engraved on the left side and has a 2-1/2” x 1/4” long ebony inlay. The receiver, lever and buttplate are silver-plated. Accompanied by a copy of a brief biography of C.B. Holden. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl retains 96-98% strong original blue. Receiver, lever and buttplate retain most of their slightly oxidized silver plating. Forearm has a repair on the left side; otherwise the wood is sound with minor storage and handling marks and retains most of its bright original varnish. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. 4-52802 JR646 (5,000-10,000)
